October 6, 2025 Skywatchers across the U.S. are in for a treat tonight as the Harvest Moon, also a supermoon, reaches its peak. This full moon event is the first of three supermoons for 2025 and promises to offer spectacular views for anyone with a clear evening sky.
What Makes Tonight Special?
- Full Moon Timing & Designation
The moon will be officially full at 11:48 p.m. EDT tonight.
Because this full moon occurs near the autumnal equinox, it earns the name “Harvest Moon.”
- Supermoon Effect
During a supermoon, the moon is at or near its closest point to Earth (perigee), which makes it appear somewhat larger and brighter than usual.
Scientists estimate that it may look up to 14 % larger and 30 % brighter compared to a more distant full moon.
- Moonrise & Viewing Tips
The moon is expected to rise shortly after sunset, and early in its ascent it may carry a rich orange hue due to atmospheric scattering.
For the best view:
- Pick a location with an unobstructed eastern horizon.
- Use binoculars or a telescope if available, though the naked eye view will be impressive.
- Watch in the early evening hours when the sky is darker but the moon is still low.
